Oxenhall’s Water
1913-2013
Here is the fascinating story of the importance of water in Oxenhall. It was harnessed to empower the Iron Industry of the 17th and 18th centuries (explored more on The Iron Industry page) and encouraged the building of the Hereford & Gloucester canal through the parish, including a branch line to the unsuccessful 19th century coal mines.
The aquifers beneath the parish led to the building of an impressive Victorian pumping station, still in use to supply a much wider area. Meanwhile the Ell and Brockmore Brooks still form a wildlife corridor now but under pressure in the 21st century.
